Topic: Economic Empowerment
Jawhar region faces acute water shortage where rainfall is adequate but still water shortage prevails in the month of April to June. With the help of local intervention of water resource management and NGO Vayam’s work in some of the village water requirement is made adequate to meet the daily water requirement.
Building of water conserving structures by NGO like spring cordon and small check dams are costly and need many technicality about soil and location. Built structures result in the failure and lacks the efficiency in storing the surface water due to faulty method of construction and improper site selection. Hence the study is done which will be helpful to select feasible structure and site for the present water resource as per the GSDA recommendation and the training to the villager is given at the village panchayat office.
Another problem Vayam is facing is to select the specific crop for the village in a given land to fetch the maximum profit. It is observed in the study region that the trend is shifting toward growing short period vegetable crops like radish and eggplant in a small area which can be grown in the present water and earning the profit by selling in nearby market. The study done to help in growing the various crops to maximize the profit by crop and amount of land use selection. Presently, selection of crop and amount of land use for cultivation in Rabi season is also the concern of villagers for the self-sustainability in a village. Over use may led to water shortage in the dry days if excess of water is used in the irrigation for Rabi crop. Study done to help in selecting the Rabi crop as well as the amount of land use for cultivation according to the water available in a village over the time apart from the water which is reserve for daily requirement of the village which will not affect day to day life of the villagers.
